A Romantic Engagement Session at Roslin Glen Country Park
There’s something about those early engagement days - that quiet excitement, the constant smiling, the way hands find each other without even thinking.
This romantic engagement session at Roslin Glen Country Park in Midlothian was inspired by that feeling. Soft, nostalgic, a little cinematic - an “engagement meets The Notebook” kind of love story. But the connection? Completely real. These two had only just gotten engaged, and that sense of we can’t quite believe this is happening was still written all over them.
Roslin Glen gave us everything - towering trees, winding woodland paths, and the beautiful historic ruins of Roslin Castle standing quietly in the background. We used the castle ruins as a romantic backdrop, letting their newly-engaged glow contrast with the aged stone and soft Scottish light. It felt timeless, like something lifted from the pages of a love story.
During our picnic-style celebration, they popped a bottle of fizz and included something very special - their mothers’ wedding rings meaningfully incorporated as a quiet gesture to their mums, no longer with us but still part of this new chapter. We captured a few tender, subtle moments with the rings, adding an extra layer of love to the morning.
And then they did something wonderfully brave. They stepped into the river.
Cold water, shoes off, laughter echoing through the trees completely in the moment and completely unbothered. Those are the kinds of images that feel alive. Intimate, honest, and full of connection. Our last shots were down in that river. Simple, unposed, and completely them - a gentle, adventurous close to a morning filled with love, laughter, and meaningful gestures.
No stiff posing. No over-direction. Just real love, real movement, and space to simply be together.
One of my favourite parts of this session actually happened before we arrived at Roslin Glen.
We chatted about ideas, about the mood they were drawn to, about outfits and how they wanted the session to feel. By the time we met in person, it didn’t feel like strangers with a camera, it felt easy. Familiar. Like friends. That comfort matters.
Because when couples feel relaxed and understood, it shows. There’s no stiffness, no hesitation - just natural connection. I truly believe that worry shows up in photographs - but so does trust. When you feel seen and heard before the session even begins, you’re free to just enjoy each other. And that’s when the magic really happens.
Engagement sessions aren’t just about having beautiful photos before the wedding. They’re about slowing down in the middle of all the planning. About celebrating this season of your life. About becoming comfortable in front of the camera so that when your wedding day arrives, it already feels easy. Whether you’re planning a wedding in Midlothian, Edinburgh, or somewhere wild in the Scottish Highlands, an engagement session is the perfect way to begin telling your story.
If you’re newly engaged and dreaming of something natural, romantic and a little adventurous, I’d love to hear your plans.
Whether it’s the ruins of Roslin Glen, a windswept coastal backdrop, or somewhere that holds meaning for you, let’s create something authentic, relaxed, and truly yours.
